Gymnasts achieve International Success in Canberra
December 2003
Moreton Bay College's top international and national gymnasts were selected for Australia to compete in the end of year International Series conducted at the Australian Institute of Sport from the 5th to 13th December 2003.
Following rigorous selection trials held in the previous week, MBC's Junior Internationals Alyce Arrowsmith and Chloe Sims were selected in the six person squad to represent Australia at the Junior International competition, the Canberra Cup. Of note, is the fact that Alyce and Chloe were the only 2 Queenslanders in the National Team comprising 2 gymnasts from WAIS and 2 from the AIS.
As the youngest members of the Australian Team, at their first International Competition, Chloe and Alyce were justifiably proud to be selected to represent Australia. However both were to contribute significantly to Australia's individual performances against a strong field of Junior Internationals from China, Japan, Canada and Wales.
Alyce Arrowsmith became Moreton Bay College's first home-grown student in the 102 year school history to achieve an International gold medal. Alyce and Chloe's performances rank them amongst the very best gymnasts in Australia and set them on track for future Commonwealth Games; World Championships and Olympic Games selection. Their extraordinary results follow:
Alyce Arrowsmith (Australia - Junior International)
3rd Individual All Around - Bronze Medal
1st Vault - Gold Medal
1st Floor Exercise - Gold Medal
3rd Uneven Bars - Bronze Medal
4th Balance BeamChloe Sims (Australia - Junior International)
9th Individual All Around
8th Uneven Bars
13th Vault
13th Balance Beam
13th Floor Exercise
These momentous results would not be achievable without the guidance of their Master International Coaches - Olga and Sasha Belooussov, who as senior coaching staff at the MBC Centre of Excellence in Gymnastics, provide unique opportunities for Queensland International gymnasts to reach their Scholastic and International Gymnastics Goals in a supportive caring College environment.
In a parallel International Competition - the WAG National Levels International Challenge (Australia v's South Africa and New Zealand) conducted with the Canberra Cup, MBC student Danica Hilton excelled for Australia in the top level competition (Level 10)
With Alyce, Danica becomes the first home-grown Moreton Bay College student to win medals at an International event. Danica's results which follow, are due to her excellent work ethic, that has always set a fine example for her team-mates, and the quality coaching staff at MBC - Olga and Sasha Belooussov, Heidi Picardi, Debbie O'Carroll and Kirsten Cole.
