Moreton
Bay College Centre
of Excellence in Gymnastics
2002
A
Year of Growth and
Achievement
Peter Dowdell M.A.T.,B.A.,Dip.T(PE).
Our
vision at Moreton
Bay College is to
provide a well resourced
and nurturing environment
based on Christian
Principles that will
assist our students
to strive for and
achieve their own
level of Individual
Excellence in their
Academic, Cultural
and Sporting pursuits.
The
completion of our
2002 Academic Year
realises the first
12 months operation
of the Moreton
Bay College Centre
of Excellence in Gymnastics.
This
innovation in sport
is a first for the
Independent and Public
School system in Queensland
and is the “benchmark”
for a school-based
“Centre of Excellence
in Sport” as it
provides the complete
“In-School” development
of the Academic, Pastoral
and Sporting needs
for our students.
Objectives
of MBC Centre of Excellence
1)
Complement
the College’s objective
of providing quality-sporting
programs and to encourage
students to achieve
their own level of
personal excellence
within the College
environment.
2) Provide for the complete “In-School”
development of MBC
students in their
chosen sporting field
of Artistic Gymnastics.
3) Ensure that the College can provide
for its own students
and prospective students
a comprehensive Sporting/Gymnastic
experience from the
Recreation/Participatory
level to the Elite
Level.
4) Raise the Public perception and profile
of MBC as “The
College” to attend
for a balanced co-operative
development of Academic
and Gymnastic excellence.
5) To establish MBC as the “benchmark” for
Queensland Independent
Schools in the provision
of a “Centre of Excellence”
in Sport.

Mr. Dale Armstrong
Ms. Sharon Crew
Ms. Colleen Burchill
The MBC Gymnastics Support Group during
their first year of
operation has established
benchmarks in terms
of operational performance
and fundraising via
event management for
MBC Support Groups.
My sincere
thanks to Ms. Claire
Nothling for her able
leadership during
2002.
Ø
The MBC Gymnastics Support Group hosted numerous Gymnastic events throughout
the year including
the Premier Womens
Artistic State Championships
in the senior division
and junior divisions;
the Junior Rhythmic
State Championships
and the Sports
Aerobics State Championships. In successfully hosting these events on behalf
of Gymnastics Queensland
MBC has established
new levels of operational
quality and success
for the staging of
gymnastic events in
Queensland.
Ø
The opening of the Waller Centre Gymnastic extensions (Inground
Gymnastic Pit) in
Term 1 by the Deputy
Premier and Minister
of Sport for Queensland
Mr. Terry Mackenroth.
This $100,000
plus “State of the
Art” training facility
completes the significant
refurbishments that
have occurred to the
Waller Centre Gymnastic
facility to provide
for the necessary
training needs of
our MBC Gymnasts. My thanks to our sponsor Action Sports for
their valued contribution
to design and installation,
of the Waller Centre
improvements.
Ø
The achievement of a significant 3 year Sponsorship deal for the MBC
Centre of Excellence
in Gymnastics
with Action Sports
Pty Ltd. As our sole equipment supplier Action has contributed
$40,000 to the refurbishment
of and supply of Olympic
standard Womens Artistic
Gymnastic equipment
to the Waller Centre
gymnasium. Action Sports sponsorship of MBC Gymnastics
is a first in the
history of our college
and has allowed MBC
Gymnastics to become
the Premier location
for staging Gymnastic
events in Queensland.
Ø
The placing of MBC Gymnasts in all 3 disciplines (Artistic, Rhythmic and
Sport Aerobics) onto
Queensland State Teams
for 2002.
Ø
The achievement of MBC Gymnastics, first National Individual Champion
– Chloe Sims
– Womens Artistic
Stage 4 National Champion
and winner of all
apparatus Gold Medals.
Chloe is the
only National Champion
in Womens Artistic
Gymnastics in Queensland
for 2002 and is (we
believe) the first
Queenslander to win
all gold medals (5)
in their category
at a National Championship. Congratulations to Chloe and her coaches Olga
and Sasha Belooussov.
Ø
During 4TH term a new initiative for MBC Gymnastics and Queensland
Gymnastics was launched,

The
objectives of the
MBC Gymnastic Associate

1)
To provide
the very best opportunity
for identified,
gifted and
appropriate
gymnasts to access
the highest level
of gymnastic tuition
for International
development in a supportive,
educational College
environment.
2) To provide for SouthEast Queensland Gymnastic
Programs a Mentoring,
Support and on going
Educational System
to enhance the quality
outcomes for Womens
Artistic Gymnastics
in Queensland.
3) To develop greater liaison between successful
competitive programs
and the MBC “Centre
of Excellence” in
Gymnastics.
Ø
During
2002 Medical Support
Services were initiated
to ensure MBC Gymnasts,
Parents and Staff
had direct access
to the best Sport
Specific Medical treatment
and advice. Accordingly highly qualified Sports Medicine practitioners in the
Medical and Physiotherapy
field were invited
to become our “Recommended
Sports Medicine Practitioners”.
The program
operates via weekly
physiotherapy visits
and thrice weekly

to the Waller Centre
and designated Sports
