ANNUAL REPORT 2003

Moreton Bay College Centre of Excellence in Gymnastics 2003

A Year of Consolidation and Achievement

Peter Dowdell MAT.,BA.,DipT(PE)

Our vision at Moreton Bay College is to provide a well resourced and nurturing environment based on Christian Principles that will assist our students to strive for and achieve their own level of Individual Excellence in their Academic, Cultural and Sporting pursuits.

2003 has been an exciting and challenging year for MBC Gymnastics; certainly a year of continued growth, achievement and consolidation.  This year marks our third year of operation as a department at MBC and the 2nd full year of operation of the MBC “Centre of Excellence” in Gymnastics.

This innovation in sport is a first for the Independent and Public School system in Queensland and is the “benchmark” for a school-based “Centre of Excellence in Sport” as it provides the complete “In-School” development of the Academic, Pastoral and Sporting needs for our students.

Objectives of MBC Centre of Excellence

1)         Complement the College’s objective of providing quality-sporting programs and to encourage students to achieve their own level of personal excellence within the College environment.

2)         Provide for the complete “In-School” development of MBC students in their chosen sporting field of Artistic Gymnastics.

3)         Ensure that the College can provide for its own students and prospective students a comprehensive Sporting/Gymnastic experience from the Recreation/Participatory level to the Elite Level.

4)         Raise the Public perception and profile of MBC as “The College” to attend for a balanced co-operative development of Academic and Gymnastic excellence.

5)         To establish MBC as the “benchmark” for Queensland Independent Schools in the provision of a “Centre of Excellence” in Sport.

May I acknowledge the comprehensive and professional manner in which the Gymnastic Support Group has (once again) organised the major State Event.  My personal thanks to the whole Support Group and all Volunteers for their tireless efforts on behalf of MBC Gymnastics.  In particular may I specifically recognise the GSG President Claire Nothling and Vice President Neil Cullen for their leadership and Event Management Skills.

The 2002/2003 Gymnastic Support Group established new benchmarks for MBC in terms of Fund-Raising; achieving a record $46,000 raised during their first 2 years of operation.  All monies raised has been utilised to fund equipment purchase for the Waller Centre and Leita Boswell Hall.

Ø                  Following the AGM (October 2003) of the Gymnastic Support Group, a new Management Committee was elected for 2004.  This newly elected body will carry on the outstanding work of the inaugural Gymnastic Support Group (2002/2003) under the leadership of Mrs Claire Nothling (President) and Mr Neil Cullen (Vice President).

It is with pleasure that I am introduce the 2004 MBC Gymnastic Support Group Management Committee;

President                               Mr Michael Rice

Vice President                      Mr Walter Kuhn

Treasurer                               Mrs Trudy Sims

Secretary                               Mrs Barbara Pugh

Committee Members           Mr Stephen Holgate & Mr David Murray

Ø                  The MBC Gymnastic Website continued to expand in 2003 thanks to the skill and direction of Mr Neil Cullen.  Please visit our site at www.mbcgymnastics.com and enjoy the quality information contained within the site, including the new additions;

Ø                  It is notable, again, for 2003 that MBC Gymnastics has produced State Representatives in our 3 competitive disciplines – WAG, RG and SA.  Congratulations to all of our State Representatives for 2003.  Please refer to “Honour Roll” 2003 at the beginning of this Report.

Ø                  MBC Gymnast in National Team for World Championships

At the 2003 National Championships for Trampoline Sports conducted at Runaway Bay (5th – 11th July); MBC student Danica Hilton was selected to represent Australia in the World Championships (age group 15 -–16 years) in Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline; to be conducted in late October in Germany.  In achieving this National Representation, Danica becomes the first MBC gymnast to represent Australia at a World Championship.

MBC Senior Gymnast, Danica Hilton returned from Germany where she successfully represented Australia at the World Championships (Age Group) for Tumbling and Double Mini Trampoline.  Her very creditable results (10th Double Mini Trampoline, 27th Tumbling) are a credit to Danica; MBC’s first representative at a World Championship competition.

Ø                  MBC continued to dominate Artistic Gymnastic performances at the QGSSSA and Andrews Cup Independent Schools Competition for 2003; with our 10th straight win in QGSSSA A Grade and 4th straight win in Andrews Cup A Grade.

Ø                  Regarding our sponsor – Action Sports Equipment Pty. Ltd.  On September 1st our sponsorship arrangements with Action Sports Equipment came to an end.  MBC Gymnastics has appreciated a very successful relationship with Action over the last 2 years; a relationship that has proved to be mutually beneficial.

Negotiations for a future sponsorship deal with another Apparatus Manufacturer is occurring to ensure we maintain the support structures necessary to underpin our successful programs.

Ø                  MBC Cheerleading will commence July in the Waller Centre with two (2) classes.  These classes will be conducted by Ms Tina Burger; one of the key players in initiating Cheerleading as an activity in the General Gymnastic discipline in Queensland; and a contributing author to the National guidelines for Cheerleading.

The development of these classes at Moreton Bay College (for Senior students ONLY) is a first in Independent Schools and will allow MBC to develop a well credentialed Cheerleading Squad for QGSSSA Events; Public performances and external competition.

Ø                  The impact of the MBC Gymnastic Medical Support Services in the diagnosis; rehabilitation and monitoring of our Gymnasts Injury needs continues to be pivotal in the performance readiness of our competitive gymnasts.  My appreciation for the outstanding professionalism of our Consulting Practitioners;

·        Dr Cameron Osborn

·        Dr Simon Locke

·        Mr Andrew McGough

·        and our Masseur Ms Michael Molyneux
